Some Top 10 College Football Series Trivia

Welcome to this week's NCAA Top 10 series trivia. Let's get started.

We have yet another Top 10 SEC game. The #5 LSU Tigers will host the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide. These teams are playing for the second time in 2012. Alabama leads the series 46-25-5 and is 3-2 against the Tigers, including a 21-0 BCS National Championship victory in January. Bama is 24-9-3 in Baton Rouge. However, the Tigers are 4-2 against the Tide in Baton Rouge since 2000. They first met in 1895, when LSU won 12-6. The highest scoring game in the series was a 41-34 LSU victory in 2007. The last time LSU shut out Alabama was 31-0 in 2002. The last time Alabama shut out LSU (in the regular season) was 27-0 in 1997. Their last tie was 14-14 in 1985.

The #2 Kansas State Wildcats will host the #24 Oklahoma State Cowboys in Manhattan. Kansas State trails in the series 22-36 and are 1-4 against the Cowboys since 2002. The Wildcats also trail the series at home 14-17, but are 6-1 against the Cowboys in Manhattan since 1990. They first met in 1908, when Kansas State won 40-10. The highest scoring game in the series was last season when Oklahoma State won 52-45. The last time Kansas State shut out Oklahoma State was 10-0 in 1992. The lat time Oklahoma State shut out Kansas State was also 10-0, but in 1980. There are no ties in the series.

The Pittsburgh Panthers go to South Bend to take on the #3 Notre Dame Fighting  Irish. Notre Dame leads the series 46-20-1 and are 14-4 against the Panthers since 1988. The Irish are 20-10 at home and are 8-1 against Pitt since 1988. They first met in 1909, when Notre Dame blanked Pitt 6-0. The highest scoring game in the series was in 1965, when the Irish spanked the Panthers 69-13. The last time Notre Dame shut out Pitt was 44-0 in 1993. The last time Pitt shut out Notre Dame was 26-0 in 1936. Their only tie was 0-0 in 1911.

The #4 Oregon Ducks will invade the LA Coliseum to take on the #17 USC Trojans. Oregon trails in the series 18-38-2, but the Ducks are 8-6 against the Trojans since 1994. Oregon trails in Los Angeles 7-25-1, but is 3-3 against the Trojans since 1994. They first met in 1915, when the Ducks blanked the Trojans 34-0. The highest scoring game in the series was a 53-32 Oregon victory in 2010. The last time USC shut out Oregon was 53-0 in 1976. The last time Oregon shut out USC was 25-0 in 1958. Their last tie was 7-7 in 1980.

The #6 Georgia Bulldogs will host the Ole Miss Rebels. Georgia leads the series 31-12-1 and  have won the last nine games against the Rebels, not losing to them since 1996. The Bulldogs also dominate the series at home 17-5-1 and are 6-1 in Athens against the Rebels since 1992. They first met in 1940, when Ole Miss won 28-14. The highest scoring game in the series was a 49-21 Georgia victory in 1985. The last time Georgia shut out Ole Miss was 49-0 in 1974. Ole Miss has never shut out Georgia. Their only tie was 14-14 in 1941.

The Missouri Tigers will go to Gainesville for the first time to play the #7 Florida Gators. They only played each other once before, in the Sugar Bowl in 1966, where the Tigers beat Heisman Trophy winner and The Ole Ball Coach, Steve Spurrier, 20-18.

Speaking of The Ole Ball Coach, the #8 South Carolina Gamecocks have a bye this week. They host the Arkansas Razorbacks next week.

The #9 Florida State Seminoles also have a bye this week. They'll go to Blacksburg to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies next Thursday.

The #10 Louisville Cardinals will host the Temple Owls. Louisville trails in the series 2-3, but have won the last two games against the Owls. The Cardinals are 1-2 at home against Temple. They first met in 1980, when Temple won 17-12. The highest scoring game in the series was a 55-14 Temple victory in 1982. The only shutout in the series came the last time they met, in 2006, when Louisville nailed Temple 62-0.

Last Place Update

Welcome to this week's Last Place Update. We have a three-way tie for last place, but the nod goes to yet another new King of the Cellar, the 1-6 Carolina Panthers, who lost their last five games. The also 1-6 Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars came close, but they only lost their last four games. Both the Panthers and Chiefs got their lone win against the same team, the New Orleans Saints. More on them in a bit. The only win the Jaguars have is against the defending Kings of the Cellar champion Indianapolis Colts, who are now 4-3. At this point, the Colts are playing too well to vie for a repeat of their title.

This week's honorable mention goes to two teams. The 4-4 Arizona Cardinals get their second mention in a row by losing with ease to the San Francisco 49ers. They began the season at 4-0 and have been winless since. Their offense hasn't scored more than 16 points in any game during this losing streak, putting more pressure on their defense, who have allowed the seventh fewest points in the league.

The other mention goes to the New  Orleans Saints, whose defense allowed more yards in seven games than any other team in NFL history, including their allowing 530 yards against the Denver Broncos' offense. This defense is worse than the 1980 Saints, who were 1-15. The 2012 defense has allowed over 200 yards rushing in three of those games and at least 300 yards passing in all but two games this season. On the offense, the rushing game is anemic, which puts more pressure on Drew Brees. Although the 2012 rushing offense has 101 more yards than the 1980 offense, if they put up another weak rushing performance, they will fall behind the 1980 rushing offense. That team had 220 rushing yards in Week 8 and the 2012 offense needs 120 rushing yards to stay ahead of that infamous team.

Next Loss...

Carolina goes to Washington DC to take on the Redskins. This is a battle of running quarterbacks and RGIII has the advantage right now. This game will depend on whose defense shows up. Carolina won the last time they visited the Redskins in 2006 and have won three of the last four games in the series. However, this will end up being a hard fought loss for the Panthers.

Jacksonville will host the Detroit Lions. This will be their fifth ever meeting, and believe it or not, the Jags lead the series 3-1, only losing their first ever meeting in 1995. Will Jacksonville continue this trend and have an upset special? Uh...no. The Lions will dominate them and make this an easy loss for the Jaguars.

In a Thursday night game, the Chiefs will invade San Diego and take on the previous honorable mention Chargers. Gotta love the AFC West, where the records can be thrown out when these teams play each other. Could this be an upset special? Let's see. The Chargers are 9-4 against the Chiefs since 2006 and won eight out of the last ten games in the series. They already faced each other this season in Kansas City and San Diego won easily. However, this is a night game and the Chiefs have won the past two of those games against the Chargers. Back to the question: Will this be an upset special? Matt Cassel is the starting quarterback for the Chiefs once again, which will help Jamaal Charles. Therefore, the answer is yes. This will be my Upset Special.

Here are a couple of historical scores for teams playing each other this week on October 30:

1967  Green Bay 31 - St. Louis Cardinals 23
2005  San Diego 28 - Kansas City 20

After two straight losses to #6 LSU and #2 Florida, the #13 South Carolina Gamecocks host the Tennessee Volunteers, fresh off their fourth straight loss in SEC play. Some Top 10 College Football Series Trivia

Welcome to this week's NCAA Top 10 college football series trivia. Let's get started.

The #1 Alabama Crimson Tide hosts the #11 Mississippi State Bulldogs in Tuscaloosa. Alabama owns the series 76-17-3. The Tide are 10-3 against the Bulldogs since 1999 and winners of the last four games. The Tide are also 7-2 against the Bulldogs at home since 1997. They first met in 1896, when Alabama blanked Mississippi State 20-0. The highest scoring game in the series was in 1988, when Alabama won 53-34. The last time Alabama shut out Mississippi State was 17-0 in 2005. The last time Mississippi State shut out Alabama was 14-0 in 1941. Their last tie was 7-7 in 1953.

In the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, the #2 Florida Gators take on the #10 Georgia Bulldogs. This is, once again, another Top 10 SEC game. Florida leads the series 48-40-2 and is 18-4 against the Bulldogs since 1990. They first met in 1904, when Georgia nailed Florida 52-0. In fact, Georgia shut out Florida in six of the first seven games in the series (1904-27), all Georgia victories. The highest scoring game in the series was in 2007, when Georgia won 42-30. The last time Georgia shut out Florida was 27-0 in 1984. The last time Florida shut out Georgia was 44-0 in 1982. Their last tie was 13-13 in 1969.

The #15 Texas Tech Red Raiders will invade Manhattan to play the #3 Kansas State Wildcats. Texas Tech leads the series 8-4 and is 5-1 against the Wildcats since 2001. The series is tied 2-2 in Manhattan, but Kansas State hasn't beaten Texas Tech at home since 2000. They first met in 1933, when Texas Tech won 6-0, the lone shutout of the series. The highest scoring game in the series was in 2005, when the Red Raiders spanked the Wildcats 59-20.

The #4 Oregon Ducks hosts the Colorado Buffaloes. The series is tied 8-8, with Oregon winning the last two meetings. Oregon is 3-2 at home against Colorado and the Buffaloes haven't won in Eugene since 1967. They met in three bowl games: the Fiesta Bowl (BCS 2002), the Aloha Bowl (1998), and the Cotton Bowl (1996). They first met in 1949, with Oregon winning 42-14. The highest scoring game in the series came in the Aloha Bowl in 1998, when Colorado won 51-43. There is only one shut out in the series, in 1956, with Oregon taking it 35-0.

In the second of two Top 10 matchups, the #5 Notre Dame fighting Irish will travel to Norman for the first time since 1966 to take on the #8 Oklahoma Sooners. Notre Dame leads the series 8-1 and is 6-0 against the Sooners since 1957. They first met in 1952, with Notre Dame winning 27-21. That was Oklahoma's last loss before going on their 47 game winning streak from 1952-57. Oklahoma finally lost to, you guessed it, Notre Dame in 1957. The highest scoring game in the series was in 1968, when Notre Dame won 45-21. The last time Notre Dame shut out Oklahoma was 7-0 in 1957. Oklahoma's lone win in the series was a shutout, 40-0 in 1956.

The #6 LSU Tigers have a bye this week. They host Alabama next week.

The Washington Huskies will host the #7 Oregon State Beavers in Seattle. Washington leads the series 58-34-4 and is 7-1 against the Beavers since 2004. Oregon State is 19-33-2 when they visit Washington, but won the last time there were there, 35-24. They first met in 1897, when Oregon State blanked the Huskies 16-0.    The #9 USC Trojans travel to Tucson to take on the Arizona Wildcats. Southern Cal dominates the series like a football score, 28-7 and is 9-1 against the Wildcats since 2001. USC is 12-3 at Arizona, last losing to the home team Wildcats in 1999. They first met in 1916, when Southern Cal won 20-7. The highest scoring games in the series were both USC victories by the same score, 48-41, in 1982 and 2011. The last time USC shut out Arizona was 45-0 in 2003. Arizona has never shut out USC.

Last Place Update

Welcome to this week's Last Place Update. For the fourth week in a row, there is a new King of the Cellar. With a close loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the 1-6 Cleveland Browns retake their place on this week's throne, beating out the 1-5 teams, such as the Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers, and Jacksonville Jaguars. To their credit, the Browns have lost only two games by more than ten points. The Panthers lost only one game by more than eight points. The same can't be said for Jacksonville, who lost three games by at least 17 points.

This week's honorable mention goes to the 4-3 Arizona Cardinals, who started off the season 4-0. What happened? The injury to Kevin Kolb made their quarterback controversy even more mediocre. However, the offense has risen to the occasion in terms of yardage. The Cardinals' offense has outgained the opposing offenses in all three losses at an average of 323 to 252 yards. However, the Cards, like their baseball counterparts, didn't win the battle of scores, which is what matters most, thus earning them this week's mention.

Next loss...

Cleveland hosts the recent honorable mention San Diego Chargers. This is my Upset Special. Maybe the bye will help the Chargers this week and their last win was at Kansas City. However, Cleveland's lone win came at home and San Diego has not been able to shut down good quarterbacks. Cleveland has beaten San Diego only twice since 1987. If rookie Brandon Weeden can get on track, then Cleveland will beat the Chargers for the first time since 2001.

Carolina goes to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Bears. Carolina trails in the series 2-4 and have not beaten the Bears since 2008. Also, the Panthers have not won on the road this season. To complicate matters, their defense has allowed at least 300 yards per games in all but the first game. Carolina also have to face former Panther defensive great Julius Peppers, who will be highly motivated for this game. The Panthers have also not played well against teams outside of the NFC South, losing at an average score of  24-11. Facing the combination of Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Matt Forte, and Peppers, the Panthers will skate to 1-6.

After a week off, the Kansas City hosts the Oakland Raiders. This is one of those games where the win/loss records mean little. The Chiefs are 3-6 against the Raiders since 2007, with two overtime losses. So far, Brady Quinn has proven nothing as the Chief's starting quarterback and a near loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars could be the wake-up call Oakland needs. Jamaal Charles must have the same kind of game against the Raiders as he did against the New Orleans Saints or this will be yet another Kansas City loss.

Speaking of that OT game in Oakland, the Jacksonville Jaguars will invade the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers. This will be only the fifth time these two teams have ever played each other and the Jags are 1-0 at Lambeau and haven't lost to the Packers since 2001. However, that was a different time and these are different teams going in different directions. This will be an easy Jacksonville loss.

Here are some historical scores for teams playing each other this week on October 23:

1960  Washington 27 - Pittsburgh 27
1988  Minnesota 49 - Tampa Bay 20
1988  New York Jets 44 - Miami 30
2000  New York Jets 40 - Miami 37 OT
2006  New York Giants 36 - Dallas 22
2011  Kansas City 28 - Oakland 0

The #1 Alabama Crimson Tide will invade Neyland Stadium to take on the Tennessee Volunteers. Alabama leads the series 49-37-8, but is 7-3 against the Vols since 2002. However, the Gamecocks have beaten the Gators only three times since 1939 and have never won three in a row against the Gators. They also didn't play each other from 1940-63. They first met in 1911, which ended up in a 6-6 tie. The highest scoring game in the series came in 2007, when Florida won 51-31. The last time Florida shut out South Carolina was 37-0 in 1964. Their highest scoring game came in 2000, when the Ducks edged the Sun Devils 56-55. There is only one shutout in the series, a 24-0 win by Arizona State in 1981.

Now that they're finally home, the West Virginia Mountaineers will take on the #4 Kansas State Wildcats. There have been only two other meetings, both in Morgantown. The series is tied 1-1.    Since the AP #8 team, the Ohio State Buckeyes are banned from postseason play this year, they are not listed in the BCS rankings. If I write another college football entry this week, the Ohio State vs Purdue game will be covered. However, their historical scores will be included today.

The #8 Oregon State Beavers will host the Utah Utes in Corvallis. Oregon State leads the series 9-6-1, but Utah is 5-2 against the Beavers since 1969. Oregon State last beat Utah in 2007. They first met in 1931, when Oregon State won 12-0, the only shutout in the series. The highest scoring game in the series was a 61-28 Beaver win in 1951. Their only tie was 20-20 in 1948.

Fresh off their spanking of the now unranked Texas Longhorns, the #9 Oklahoma Sooners will take on the Kansas Jayhawks in Norman. Oklahoma owns the series 69-27-6, having won every game against the Jayhawks since 2000. Kansas once owned the series, having won the first eight games, six by shutout. They first met in 1903, when Kansas won 17-5. The highest scoring game in the series came in 1987, when the Sooners dominated the Jayhawks 71-10. There have been 25 shutouts in the series, plus two 0-0 ties. Oklahoma has a 14-11 edge in shutouts, not including the ties. The last time Oklahoma shut out Kansas was 38-0 in 1979. The last time Kansas shut out Oklahoma was 10-0 in 1961. Their last tie was 13-13 in 1960.

The #10 USC Trojans will host the Colorado Buffaloes at the Los Angeles Coliseum. USC is undefeated against Colorado in the series 6-0. They first met in 1927 and the Trojans won 27-6. The highest scoring game in the series was last season 42-17. There are only two shutouts in the series, coming in consecutive years, 14-0 in 1963 and 21-0 in 1964.

Here are some historical scores for this week's Top 25 matchups played on October 18:

Last Place Update

Welcome to this week's Last Place Update. Once again, there is a new King of the Cellar. This week, for getting their first win of the season, the 1-5 Cleveland Browns got knocked off the throne by the 1-5 Kansas City Chiefs. Ever since Jamaal Charles put up Walter Payton type numbers against the New Orleans Saints in Week 3, that second victory has been as elusive as Charles is in the open field. The last time the Chiefs started off 1-5 was in 2009, when they finished with a 4-12 record. The last time the Browns started off 1-5 was in 2010, when they finished the season 5-11.

This week's honorable mention goes to the San Diego Chargers. After blowing certain victories against the Saints and Denver Broncos, they turned a good 5-1 record into a mediocre 3-3 record. The last time San Diego started the season at 3-3 was in 2009, when they finished with a 13-3 record. Will they get into gear or compete for Kings of the Cellar?

Next Loss...

Here's a bold prediction. The Chiefs will not lose this week. Okay, it's no prediction at all. Kansas City has a bye this week. They will host the Oakland  Raiders next week.

Cleveland will visit the Indianapolis Colts, the defending Kings of the Cellar champions. Indy is doing better at 2-3, but the Browns could pull an upset here, too. Cleveland won two in a row once last season and it started at Indy. However, although both teams are better at quarterback, Indy is third against the pass, so the Browns should get the loss.

Let's look at the other 1 win teams...

The New Orleans Saints will visit sunny Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, fresh off their win over the Chiefs. As with the Browns and Colts, this is a toss-up. The Saints are 31st against the run and the Bucs are 31st against the pass. The is a game the Bucs should win, but the Saints have won their first game after the bye week the last three seasons. The team whose running game and defense shows up will win.

The Carolina Panthers will host the Dallas Cowboys. This is the best defense the Panthers will face so far this season. After a heartbreak in Baltimore, the Cowboys should keep a struggling Cam Newton in check and get the win. If Newton plays like he did last season, this could be an upset.

In a battle of 1-4 teams, the Jacksonville Jaguars will invade the Raider Nation to play the Oakland Raiders. This is Oakland's game to lose. Both teams have only been in contention for two games, including their lone victories. However, the Raiders have the better offense and should keep the Jags at one win.

Here are some historical scores for teams playing each other this week on October 16:

1955  Green Bay 30 - Los Angeles Rams 28
1960  Washington 24 - New York Giants 24
1966  New York Giants 13 - Washington 10
1983  Detroit 31 - Chicago 17
1994  New York Jets 24 - New England 17
1994  Pittsburgh 14 - Cincinnati 10
2011  Tampa Bay 26 - New Orleans 20
2011  Baltimore 29 - Houston 14
2011  Green Bay 24 - St. Louis 3

The Acts of 1

It's taken a while, but there is a reason that there have been few "On this day in" trivia entries. I've been working on writing a book. In fact, there are three; one published and two on deck. My first book is The Acts of 1 - A Collection of Short Stories.

The Acts of 1 is my first published literary work. This is actually a surprise, because I figured the novel I've been working on would have gone first. I wrote the short stories when I got stuck on parts of the novel. Except for the last three, the stories are in the order they were written.

There are a total of seven stories and four are listed in the book description on Amazon, The Prayer, The Note, A Flash In Time, and The Librarian. Click the link below to see. The other three short stories are A Wish For Sarah, Waiting Room, and The Immortals. There is a movie called The Immortals, but this story has absolutely nothing to do with the movie. My story of the same title takes place in the present in a  drama class at a fictional college. It involves a silent movie once considered lost, but recently found and restored. There's more to the silent movie than meets the drama professor's eye.

At this time, The Acts of 1 is only available for the Kindle. The book is $2.99 and is available in the Kindle Owners' Lending Library. Hope you enjoy it.

Some Top 10 College Football Series Trivia

Welcome to this week's edition of NCAA Top 10 football series trivia. Let's get started.

The #1 Alabama Crimson Tide travels to Columbia for the first time since 1978, when Bear Bryant coached the Tide, to take on the Missouri Tigers. Missouri leads the series 2-1. They first met in the Gator Bowl in 1968, when the Tigers won 35-10. Alabama got its only victory in 1978, 38-10 (the highest scoring game in the series), after losing again to the Tigers in 1975. There are no shutouts in the series.

The #2 Oregon Ducks have a bye this week. The play the Arizona State Sun Devils next Thursday.

The #3 South Carolina Gamecocks will invade Death Valley in Baton Rouge to take on the #9 LSU Tigers. This is the second consecutive Top 10 game for both teams. LSU dominates the series, 16-2-1. They first met in 1930, when the Gamecocks won 7-6. South Carolina didn't beat LSU again until 1994. The highest scoring game in the series came in 1973 when LSU won 33-29. The last time LSU shut out South Carolina was 42-0 in 1961. South Carolina has never shut out LSU. Their lone tie was 20-20 in 1995.

The Vanderbilt Commodores will host the #4 Florida Gators. Florida owns the series 34-9-2. They first met in 1945, a 7-0 win for the Commodores. Vanderbilt last beat Florida in 1988 and last won two in a row from the Gators in 1952 and 1955. Vandy has never won three straight against Florida. The highest scoring game in the series came in 2005, where Florida won in a shootout 49-42. The last time the Gators shut out the Commodores was 52-0 in 1993. The last time the Commodores shut out the Gators was 20-0 in 1946. Their last tie was 14-14 in 1968.

The #5 West Virginia Mountaineers will finish their Texas Tour this week in Lubbock to play the Texas Tech Red Raiders. They only met one other time, in 1938 in the Sun Bowl, with the Mountaineers winning 7-6.

The Iowa State Cyclones will host the #6 Kansas State Wildcats in Ames. Iowa State leads the series 49-42-4. However Kansas State has won the last four games in the series and are 18-4 against the Cyclones since 1990. They first met in 1917, a 10-7 Iowa State victory. They first met in the Rose Bowl 1925 with Notre Dame winning 27-10. The highest scoring game came in 2005, with Stanford winning 45-38. The last time Notre Dame shut out Stanford was 27-0 in 1942. Stanford has never shut out Notre Dame.

The #8 Ohio State Buckeyes will invade Memorial Stadium in Bloomington to take on the Indiana Hoosiers. Ohio State owns the series 68-12-5. The last time Indiana beat Ohio State, they won two straight, in 1987 and 1988. The Buckeyes have won the last 17 games against the Hoosiers. They first met in 1901, when Indiana won 18-6. The Hoosiers began the series at 5-0-1, but then Ohio State took over and never looked back. Their highest scoring game came in 1982, with the Buckeyes winning 49-25. Last Place Update

Welcome to this week's Last Place Update. Congrats to Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints for breaking a once considered unbreakable record of throwing a touchdown pass in 48 straight games. Job well done!! Tom Brady owns the next longest streak, which is less than a season of games behind Brees. Trivia note: Johnny Unitas wore number 19. His number was called in the record breaking play, as Brees threw a touchdown pass to number 19, Devery Henderson. Unitas' son Joe handled Brees surpassing his father with class, by attending the game and supporting Brees with his accomplishment. Now to the Update.

The 0-5 Cleveland Browns fought the good fight against the New York Giants, but they are now this week's Kings of the Cellar. They are the lone winless team in the NFL. The San Diego Chargers made key mistakes against the Saints and Brees made them pay the price, which were the first victory of the season and the record. Cleveland is 0-5 for the first time since 1999, their first year back after the original club moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens in 1996. The 1999 Browns started 0-7. The Browns are also sporting a 11 game losing streak, their last win coming in Week 11 last season against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

There are five teams with a 1-4 record and the loser of that group is the Carolina Panthers, who lost three straight, including a 16-12 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Although the Panthers were 4-2 in the final six games of last season, that promise was broken by not being able to overtake or put teams away. They also started the season 1-4 last year and went 1-5 before beating the Washington Redskins. At least they last beat a team with a winning record last season.

This week's honorable mention goes to the 2-3 Buffalo Bills. Although the showed a spark by beating the Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland, other opponents exposed they weaknesses. The New York Jets (honorable mention runner-up), New England Patriots, and San Francisco 49ers all spanked the Bills by scoring a minimum of 45 points, with the Pats putting up 52 on them.

Next Loss...

Cleveland returns home to face their cross-state rivals the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals swept the series last season. The Browns have beaten the Bengals only three times since 2004, the last time in 2010. The last time Cleveland swept Cincinnati was in 2002, the Browns' first winning season since their return in 1999. However, this could be an upset special and if there is to be one, this is it.

Since Carolina,  New Orleans, and the Jacksonville Jaguars have a bye this week, let's focus on the other 1-4 teams.

The Kansas City Chiefs travel to sunny Florida to take on the 1-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This could be an upset special and if Jamaal Charles runs against the Bucs like he did against the Saints, then it will be a definite upset. However, Tampa Bay's defense is much better than the Saints' defense, which makes the upset less likely.

The Tennessee Titans will host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. Much like the Saints-Falcons rivalry, the records don't matter much for this game. Pittsburgh swept the series last year. but if the Titans can get their running game in gear, this too, could be an upset special. Tennessee has never swept a Pittsburgh season series with Ben Roethlisberger as Steelers' quarterback. In fact, the last time the Titans swept the Steelers was in 2000. As with the Saints, Lions, and Packers, the Titans are a better team than their record indicates, but until they show up for sixty minutes, the Steelers will emerge victorious on Thursday.

Here are some historical scores for teams playing each other this week, today in:

1977  New England 31 - Seattle 0
1977  Houston Oilers 27 - Pittsburgh 10
1994  New York Jets 16 - Indianapolis 6
2011  San Diego 29 - Denvver 24
2011  Pittsburgh 38 - Tennessee 17

Last Place Update

Welcome to the first Last Place Update for the 2012 NFL season. Things are definitely much different than they were at this time last year.

Although there are two 0-4 teams, this week's Kings of the Cellar go to the New Orleans Saints, who have gone 0-4 for the first time since 1996. This is a team that should be at least 2-2, or even 3-1, but after four games, the defense has allowed more yards than the 1-15 1980 team, 1,853 to 1,517. Because of the sheer amount of talent on the team, with a grossly underachieving defense and mediocre running game, I've chosen my beloved Saints to dominate the cellar.

The other 0-4 team, the Cleveland Browns are by far a worse team than the Saints, but they're expected to lose. Once the Saints win a game, the cellar will belong to the Browns. What's worse than being 0-4 is that Cleveland have lost 13 of their last 15 games, including 10 straight. The last time Cleveland beat a team with a winning record was in Week 9 of the 2010 season when they beat the New England Patriots 34-14, handing the Pats their second and last loss of the regular season.

This week's honorable mention goes to the 1-3 Detroit Lions. After winning their first game of the season, the Lions have lost three straight, making them the lone occupants of the NFC North cellar. As with the Saints, Detroit is a better team than their record indicates. The Lions losses are by a touchdown or less. On a positive note, they have a bye this week.

   Next Loss...

The Saints will host the San Diego Chargers in the Superdome on Sunday night. This is my Upset Special. The Saints' defense had its best outing of the season against a high powered Green Bay Packer offense, losing on a missed field goal attempt. Drew Brees shines in prime time and he is playing his old team.

Cleveland will go to The Meadowlands to face their former NFL Century Division rivals, the New York Giants. The Browns won their last meeting in 2008, but they won't this time. Their best chances are if Eli Manning has a bad day or if the Browns' defense rises to the occasion. This should be an easy loss for the Browns.

Last Place Update

Welcome to the final Last Place Update of the MLB season. The 55-107 Houston Astros have repeated as Kings of the Cellar. They finished with one more loss than last season. The only other 100 plus game loser in MLB, the 61-101 Chicago Cubs, made it interesting by losing 14 of their last 18 games. The 64-98 Colorado Rockies round out the bottom three. It appears that once again, the 66-96 Minnesota Twins can't seem to stay off the radar, losing their last five games to overtake the 68-94 Cleveland Indians as the AL's worst team.

The last repeat Kings of the Cellar, the Washington Nationals, finished the season with MLB's best record of 98-64. Could the Astros make the same kind of run in the coming years? Only time will tell.

Once again, the 69-93 Boston Red Sox earn this week's honorable mention by doing a crash and burn worse than Minnesota, by losing their last eight games. They won the last honorable mention of the season last year. At least this time, they weren't in contention for a playoff spot.

The Last Place Updates are a tongue-in-cheek look at the worst teams in whatever sport is featured. However, only a tiny percent of our population is good enough to play for a professional sports team and it doesn't matter if that team wins it all or dwells in the cellar. It is important to remember and appreciate that it takes a special kind of athlete to earn the privilege to play for a professional sports team, whether it is for only a season or a long Hall of Fame career.

Hats off the Major League Baseball for yet again, another great season!!

Note: The Last Place Updates for the NFL start tomorrow.

The #7 Kansas State Wildcats will host their state rivals, the Kansas Jayhawks in The Sunflower Showdown in Manhattan. Kansas leads the series 65-39-5, but Kansas State is 16-5 against the Jayhawks since 1991. They could also call the series The Shutout Showdown, because there are 35 shutouts in the series, including ties. In fact, Kansas shut out Kansas State every year from 1960-65. They first met in 1902, when Kansas shut the Wildcats out 16-0, and shut out Kansas State in three of their first four meetings. The highest scoring game in the series came last season when the Wildcats won 59-21. The last time the Wildcats shut out the Jayhawks was 64-0 in 2002. The #9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish will take on the Miami Hurricanes in South Bend. Notre Dame leads the series 16-7-1. All of Miami's victories against the Irish came from those vaunted Hurricane teams from the 1980's. They first met in 1955, when Notre Dame won 14-0. The highest scoring game in the series came in 1976, when the Irish won 40-27. The last time the Hurricanes shut out the Irish was 24-0 in 1987. The last time the Irish shut out the Hurricanes was 20-0 in 1978. There only tie was 0-0 in 1965.

Here are some historical scores for this week's Top 25 matchups that were played on this day:
