One of life's constants is change...except for today's Kings of the Cellar. The 54-88 Philadelphia Phillies have a two game lead over my 56-86 Atlanta Braves. Philly is 1-7 since the last update and is enjoying a three game losing streak. My Braves are hanging with the Phillies, going 2-7 since the last update and are 3-22 since August 17.
Bringing up the rear are the 58-81 Cincinnati Reds and 59-82 Colorado Rockies. Both teams are 5.5 games behind Philly. Since Miami has been doing some winning, Cincy replaced them as the Cellar tease. The Reds are 5-5 in their last ten games and just broke a two game losing streak. The Rockies have also been doing some winning, going 5-4 since the last update and are on a two game winning streak.
The 60-81 Oakland A's continue their reign as the AL's worst team. The A's are 3-7 in their last ten games, losers of their last two. The defending Kings of the Cellar champion 68-73 Arizona Diamondbacks are 3-4 since the last update and are on a two game win streak. The Diamondbacks are 14.5 games behind the Phillies and remain no threat to repeat.Today's honorable mention goes to.83-57 Kansas City Royals. KC is 3-7 in their last ten games, losers of their last two.
The former Pittsburgh Alleghenys host the former Seattle Pilots this evening. The former Pilots lead the series against the now Pittsburgh Pirates 163-126 and the now Brewers are 10-7 against Pittsburgh this season. They first met in inter-league play in 1997, when the Brewers won 4-1. The most runs the Pirates scored against Milwaukee was a 17-10 win on August 24, 2002. The most runs the Brewers scored against Pittsburgh was a 20-0 spanking on April 22, 2010. Their longest game went to 14 innings three different times, with the last one occurring last season . On April 20, 2014 Milwaukee won 3-2, marking their only win in the three 14 inning games. Pittsburgh won the other two 2-1 (June 30, 2013) and 6-5 (April 28, 2010).
Will Philly hold on to the Cellar? Will the Rockies or my Braves kick them out? Will Cincy continue to be a tease or will Miami make a comeback?

Last Place Update - August 4
Ah, the game's afoot! The 41-65 Philadelphia Phillies' dominance of the beer in the cellar has almost disappeared. For now, the Phillies are still Kings of the Cellar. They lead the 43-63 Miami Marlins by two games and the 44-63 Milwaukee Brewers by 2.5 games. The 47-59 Boston Red Sox ended their rapid descent to the cellar and even allowed the 47-60 Oakland A's to reign as the AL's worst team right now.
Thanks to Philly's going 3-2 since the last update, the 1962 New York Met's record of futility is safe for another year.
Today's honorable mention goes to the 56-49 Los Angeles Angels. They are 2-8 in their last ten games and just broke a six game losing streak. However, their losing streak cost the Angels the lead in the AL West, which the former Kings of the Cellar Champion Houston Astro's now own.
The defending Kings of the Cellar Champions, the 51-53 Arizona Diamondbacks are treading water and appear to be no threat. They are 11 games behind the Phillies and are 7-3 in their last ten games.

Kings of the Cellar - June 24
Welcome to the Cellar! It's cool in here on this hot summer day, so grab a beer and let's have some fun.
The 26-47 Philadelphia Phillies continue their reign as Kings of the Cellar, but they're only a half game ahead of the 26-46 Milwaukee Brewers. Both teams are fighting hard for the beer, with Philly going 2-3 since the last update and the Brew Crew going 2-4. Today's honorable mention goes to the 39-33 Los Angeles Dodgers. They're 3-7 in their last ten games and 1-4 in their last five.
The defending champion Kings of the Cellar, the 34-36 Arizona Diamondbacks are 3-3 since the last update and are 9.5 games behind Philly. At this time, they are no threat to repeat, but things could change.
After 73 games, the Phillies are six games behind the 1962 New York Mets, who were 20-53. Philly is a collapse away from catching up to the legendary Mets. For those of you who don't know, the team who came closest to breaking the Mets' record of futility since the 1962 season was the 2003 Detroit Tigers, who ended that season at 43-119. After 73 games, the 2003 Tigers were 18-55.
Philly visits the New York Yankees today. Believe it or not. the Phillies lead the series 14-12 and have won the last four meetings. Philly is 6-2 against the Yankees since 2009.
Does this mean Milwaukee will take the lead? Maybe. They face the Mets today. The Brewers trail the series 52-66 and are 2-2 against the Mets this season. Except for yesterday's game, none of them have been close.
Will Milwaukee kick Philly out and reclaim the cellar? Will Philly collapse and threaten the '62 Mets or '03 Tigers? Will the Diamondbacks try to make a return to the cellar?

Kings of the Cellar - June 17
Congrats to the 2015 NBA Champion Golden State Warriors!! Job well done! And hats off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for putting up a good fight, even with their key injuries.
The 22-44 Philadelphia Phillies are the MLB Kings of the Cellar for now. They are 1-9 in their last ten games, 1-12 in their last 13, and are on an eight game losing streak. Philly passed and is now two games ahead of the previous leader, the 24-42 Milwaukee Brewers. Today's honorable mention goes to the 34-30 Minnesota Twins, who are 2-8 in their last ten games and are 4-11 since June 2. The defending Kings of the Cellar Champion 31-33 Arizona Diamondbacks are ten games behind the Phillies and currently pose no threat to repeat.
The good news for the Phillies is that the 1899 Cleveland Spiders 20-134 record is safe for another year. The bad news is, although not likely, the 1962 New York Mets record of futility of 40-120 is still withing Philly's reach. After 66 games, the Mets were 18-48. For those of you who haven't read the Kings of the Cellar entries for MLB, the key stat in threatening or breaking the losing records is the number of wins, because of the differing numbers of games in a season over the decades.
Today, Philadelphia faces the Baltimore Orioles. Philly trails in the series 22-28 and are 2-9 against Baltimore since 2006. The Phillies last beat the Orioles 9-6 on June 8, 2012.
Speaking of Kings of the Cellar, the three-peat (2011-13) Kings of the Cellar Champion Houston Astros are doing what the repeat (2008-09) Kings of the Cellar Champion Washington Nationals are doing...winning. The 38-28 Astros lead the AL West by two games over the Texas Rangers and have the fourth best record in the MLB. Way to go Astros!

Finally, drum corps season starts tonight. Good luck to my alma mater drum and bugle corps, the Phantom Regiment (DCI) and AtlantaCV (DCA)!!! Also good luck to the Louisiana Stars (DCI) in their second season!!

Random Stuff
It's been over a month and a half since my last post. Oh well. Life's been busy.
First of all, congrats to the 16-66 Minnesota Timberwolves. They are the 2015 NBA Kings of the Cellar and by luck of the draw, the T-Wolves have the first pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. May they choose well.
Speaking of Kings of the Cellar, the 16-34 Milwaukee Brewers are MLB's Kings of the Cellar right now. They are 2.5 games ahead of the 19-32 Philadelphia Phillies and Oakland A's. An honorable mention goes out to the 25-24 New York Yankees. They are 3-7 in their last ten games and 4-12 since May 12.
I started a NFL Draft trivia post like the one I wrote a few years ago. Still not done with it, but I will post it soon.
We're still working on the fixes to my first novel, The Curse. Hopefully the revised version will be published in the next week or two. If you downloaded a copy of The Curse, please let me know.
There are tons of writing advice out there. Some of it is great and some of it is total crap. The key is to figure out what works for you as a writer. One piece of advice I followed is to not make every post or blog entry translate to "Buy my book." I do bring up my books when one of them has a free promotion. It's good advice, but when is a good time to hawk your books? Feedback on that varies.
About a year ago, I wrote that my upcoming ebook, Second Chance should be published by August. Yeah, that didn't work too well. The upside is it won't have anywhere near the editing issues that The Curse had.
I decided to pass on a free promotion this quarter of my ebook, Rickshaw, New Mexico.
Right now, I'm doing the first edit of my April 2014 CampNaNoWriMo project, Justice. I'm also writing a short story set somewhere in the Tennessee Appalachian mountains. Once I finish writing the story, there will be enough short stories for another book.

Last Place Update - July 8
Welcome to this week's Last Place Update. We have a new leader...same as the old leader.
The defending Kings of the Cellar champion 32-57 Houston Astros have overtaken the 32-55 Miami Marlins and are this week's Kings of the Cellar. The Astros lead the Marlins by a game. The 34-51 Chicago White Sox supplanted their former AL Central foes, the 35-52 Milwaukee Brewers, to bring up the rear. Houston is 2-8 in their last ten games and 3-10 since June 23. The Marlins lost their last three and are 5-5 in their last ten games. And this week's newcomers, the White Sox, are 2-8 in their last ten games, losers of their last three. They are also 3-10 since June 23.
Since the last update, Houston went 2-5, Miami went 3-4, and Milwaukee also went 3-4. The White Sox went 2-4, earning the third slot.
This week's honorable mention goes to the 40-49 San Diego Padres. San Diego is 1-9 in their last ten games and on a nine game losing streak. The Padres are 2-13 since June 24. They have a homestand this week against the Colorado Rockies and the San Francisco Giants. The three teams have similar records, so anything is possible. The Padres could have a great or rotten week. They should fare better.
So how is Houston faring against the '62 Mets and '03 Tigers? The '62 Mets and '03 Tigers were 24-65 after 89 games. And to continue a theme from last week, the '62 Mets, '03 Tigers, and '13 Astros all lost game #89. At least the '03 Tigers won July 8 that season.
Will Houston hoard the beer in the cellar or will Miami take another shot at the bottom? How far will the White Sox's losing streak go? Will the '03 Tigers and '62 Mets records be safe for another year by the end of July?

Last Place Update - July 1
An early Happy Fourth of July to you all!! Welcome to this week's Last Place Update. They fight, they claw their way, and refuse to give up on themselves to keep winning. No, this isn't the Pittsburgh Pirates, who won nine straight. Then who?
The 29-51 Miami Marlins continue their winning ways and are in a virtual tie with the 30-52 defending Kings of the Cellar champion Houston Astros. The 33-45 New York Mets won six of their last ten games and got booted from third place by the 32-48 Milwaukee Brewers, who are three games behind the Marlins.Miami is 7-3 in their last ten games and 13-7 since June 8. Houston, alas, is 3-7 in their last ten games, losers of their last three. This week's newcomer, the Brewers, are also 3-7 in their last ten games, but they lost five straight.
Since the last update, Miami went 4-1, Houston went 1-4, and the Mets went 3-3. The Marlins fared better in their last ten games than all of their NL East rivals. They also did better than the NL West leading Arizona Diamondbacks and the AL East leading Boston Red Sox. The Giants are on the road this week to play a four game series with the Cincinnati Reds and return home to a three game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. They swept the Dodgers the last time they played in San Francisco, but this is the first time they are facing the Reds.
So how is Miami doing against the '62 Mets and the '03 Tigers? The Marlins are only eleven games behind the Mets' total wins from their inauspicious inaugural season. The '62 Mets were 23-57 after 80 games, but they actually won game number 80, the first in a doubleheader. They lost the second game. The '03 Tigers were doing worse, with a record of 19-61 after 80 games. They, too, won game number 80 and they won game number 81 to bring their win total to 20. And yes, Miami also won game number 80.

Local New Orleans broadcaster and former New Orleans Saints sideline reporter for WWL 870 AM, Kenny Wilkerson, died this past weekend. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Wilkerson family.
On the drum corps front, today in 1967, the Des Plaines Vanguard won a contest in Kenosha, WI with a score of 78.80. The Kilties came in second place (74.80), followed by the Blue Stars (74.60), Norwood Park Imperials (74.00), SkyRyders (63.70), and the Madison Scouts (54.70). Of these corps, the Blue Stars and Madison Scouts still compete today. The Kilties compete in the DCA circuit.
Today in 1985, the Blue Devils won the DCI contest in Norman, OK with a score of 86.90. The Santa Clara Vanguard came in second (84.90), followed by the Phantom Regiment (72.70), Freelancers (58.50), Velvet Knights (58.40), and the California Dons (48.10). The top three still compete at the highest levels today and are current or former DCI champions.

Last Place Update - June 10
Welcome to this week's Last Place Update. The gap is closing.
The defending Kings of the Cellar champion 22-42 Houston Astros nudged a little closer to this week's Kings of the Cellar, the 18-44 Miami Marlins. The Marlins now lead by three games. Miami is three wins away from keeping the 1899 Cleveland Spiders record of futility safe for another year. The 23-35 New York Mets bring up the rear by trailing the Marlins by seven games.
Since the last update, Miami went a respectable 2-3, winning their last two games. However, in true Kings of the Cellar fashion, Houston went 2-5, losing their last four. The Mets supplanted the Milwaukee Brewers by going 4-6 in their last ten games, losing their last two. The Brewers did a little winning and went 4-3, winning their last three games.
This week's honorable mention goes to the 30-32 Cleveland Indians. Cleveland is 2-8 in their last ten games, losers of their last seven. They are also 4-15 since May 21. With the Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals on the horizon, the Indians may end up here again next week.
So how are the Marlins doing against some of the worst teams ever? Again, the 1899 Spders' record should be safe for another year. They were 12-50 after 62 games. Of this group, only Pioneer and the Racine Scouts still compete today.
Will Miami continue their winning ways and open the door for Houston to repeat? Or will the Marlins collapse and replace the 2003 Tigers or 1962 Mets with their own record of futility?

The defending Kings of the Cellar champion 22-42 Houston Astros nudged a little closer to this week's Kings of the Cellar, the 18-44 Miami Marlins. The Marlins now lead by three games. Miami is three wins away from keeping the 1899 Cleveland Spiders record of futility safe for another year. The 23-35 New York Mets bring up the rear by trailing the Marlins by seven games.
Since the last update, Miami went a respectable 2-3, winning their last two games. However, in true Kings of the Cellar fashion, Houston went 2-5, losing their last four. The Mets supplanted the Milwaukee Brewers by going 4-6 in their last ten games, losing their last two. The Brewers did a little winning and went 4-3, winning their last three games.
This week's honorable mention goes to the 30-32 Cleveland Indians. Cleveland is 2-8 in their last ten games, losers of their last seven. They are also 4-15 since May 21. With the Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals on the horizon, the Indians may end up here again next week.
So how are the Marlins doing against some of the worst teams ever? Again, the 1899 Spders' record should be safe for another year. They were 12-50 after 62 games. Last Place Update - June 3
Welcome to this week's Last Place Update. Now it gets interesting...
The 16-41 Miami Marlins have taken a commanding lead over the defending Kings of the Cellar Champions, the 20-37 Houston Astros. The Marlins lead Houston by 4 games and the third place 21-34 Milwaukee Brewers by 6 games. However, the Marlins swept the New York Mets this weekend. Houston is also on a winning tear, by winning five straight. Milwaukee bucks this winning trend by going 3-7 in their last ten games and 4-10 since May 19.
This week's honorable mention goes to the 23-31 Kansas City Royals. The Royals are 2-8 in their last ten games and 3-14 since May 17. Kansas City has a homestand against last week's honorable mention, the Minnesota Twins and the defending champion Astros.
After their three game win streak, Miami put some distance from the 1899 Cleveland Spiders record. The Spiders were 10-47 after 57 games. However, the Marlins are even with the 1962 Mets at 16-41 after the same number of games. And let's not forget a more recent abysmal record of futility, the 2003 Detroit Tigers. They were also 16-41 after 57 games.

At one time, this was the first week of competition in drum and bugle corps. The 2013 season kicks off on June 19.
To stay on topic with drum and bugle corps, today in 1978, the Phantom Regiment won the Illinois Drum Corps Association show (69.95), beating the Guardsmen (60.20), Pioneer (43.95), CapitolAires (35.25), and Phantom Regiment Cadets (26.45). The Phantom Regiment and Guardsmen went on to compete at DCI Finals in Denver, CO. Today, only the Phantom Regiment and Pioneer still compete from those who competed in this show.
Is this the turning point for Houston and Miami? Can they put the 1899 Spiders, 1962 Mets, and 2003 Tigers in the rear view mirrors? Or will they have an epic collapse and break one of these records?

Today in 1975 - Minnesota Twins vs Milwaukee Brewers
August 27, 1975 – Today in 1975, the Minnesota Twins took on the Milwaukee Brewers at County Stadium in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This was a pitchers’ duel that lasted until the 11th inning and both starting pitchers were still on the mound.
In the top of the 11th Milwaukee’s Bill Travers faced Rod Carew, who grounded out to shortstop. Craig Kusick came to bat and was hit by a pitch for the third time in the game. Steve Brye was put in to pinch run for Kusick. Then Travers walked John Briggs and there were two men on. Travers was relieved by Tom Murphy and faced Tony Oliva at the plate. Oliva hit a single to left field and Brye scored. There were runners at first and second. Steve Braun got on base on a fielder’s choice and Murphy walked Lyman Bostock. The bases were loaded. Glenn Borgmann could have increased the lead with a base hit, but was out on pop-up foul ball; out three.
Don Money was first up for the Brewers. Money flied out to left field. Bob Sheldon hit a single into left field. Blyleven then faced Bill Sharp, who got out on a pop fly to shortstop. Milwaukee’s last chance, George Scott, came to the plate. Scott flied out to center field and the game was over. Minnesota won 1-0.
Blyleven pitched a complete game and went to 14-6 with the win, striking out 13. Travers dropped to 5-8 with the loss and struck out 2.
Minnesota went to 63-69 with the win. They were 16.5 games behind the AL West leading Oakland A’s and in 5th place. Milwaukee fell to 57-75 with the loss. They were 22 games behind the AL East leading Boston Red Sox, also in 5th place.

- There were 3 Hall of Famers playing in this game: Rod Carew and Bert Blyleven for the Twins, and Hank Aaron for the Brewers.
- This was Del Crandall’s last season managing the Brewers. Crandall was featured in yesterday’s Notables section.
- This was also Frank Quilici’s last season managing the Twins. He managed the team from 1972-75. He played for the Twins in 1965 and from 1967-70.
- Both designated hitters did poorly in this game. Both Danny Thompson and Hank Aaron went 0-4.
