Today in 1992 - Chicago Bears vs New Orleans Saints


Today in 1992, the Chicago Bears visited the New Orleans Saints in the Louisiana Superdome for a Week 2 matchup.

Chicago got on the board first in the second quarter with a 39 yard field goal by Kevin Butler, who also kicked a 30 yard field goal.  The score was 6-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Bobby Hebert threw a 52 yard touchdown pass to Eric Martin to give the Saints the lead 7-6.

The fourth quarter belonged to New Orleans.  Hebert threw a 72 yard touchdown pass to Wesley Carroll and the Dome Patrol took over.  Robert “Pig” Goff ran a fumble recovery in for a touchdown.  Reggie Jones finished the Bears off by intercepting a Jim Harbaugh pass and ran it 71 yards for a touchdown.

The New Orleans Saints beat the Chicago Bears 28-6.  Harbaugh passed 25-45 260 yards 2 INTs.  Hebert passed 13-25 264 yards 2TDs.  Trace Armstrong and Tim Ryan each had a sack for the Bears.  Pat Swilling and Rickey Jackson each had a sack for the Saints.  Both teams went to 1-1.

Notables

  • There were 4 Hall of Famers either playing or coaching in this game: Mike Singletary, Richard Dent, and head coach Mike Ditka for the Bears, and Rickey Jackson for the Saints.
  • This was Ditka’s last season coaching the Bears.  He coached the team from 1982-92 and led the team to a Super Bowl championship.
  • This was Jim Mora’s seventh season coaching the Saints.  He coached the team from 1986-96 and led the team to its first ever playoff appearance in 1987 and first division championship in 1991.  He was succeeded in 1997 by Mike Ditka.
  • Bears quarterback Jim Harbaugh is now the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.  He replaced his teammate Mike Singletary, who coached the Niners from 2008-10.
  • Bears linebacker Ron Rivera is now the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.
  • This was the last season the Dome Patrol starting linebackers, Rickey Jackson, Vaughan Johnson, Sam Mills, and Pat Swilling, played together.  Swilling signed with the Detroit Lions in 1993.  They played together from 1987-92 and never had a losing season.
  • Saints kicker Morten Andersen holds the all-time scoring records for both the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons.
