Some NFL Series Trivia - Week 16 (Part 1)

Here is this week's series trivia. All-time records include postseason games.

Atlanta vs Detroit: The Lions lead the series 23-11, but the Falcons are 5-3 against Detroit since 1998. Detroit leads the series at home 15-5, but Atlanta is 3-2 in Detroit since 1998. The Lions won every game in the beginning of the series, going 9-0 from 1966-76. Atlanta got its first win against Detroit in 1977 and in Detroit in 1986. The Falcons have never beaten the Lions three times in a row. Atlanta can do that for the first time with a win tomorrow, since they already won the last two meetings. They have never met in the postseason, but have gone to overtime twice. The Lions won both games, the last time in 1994, 31-28. The only shutout in the series was a 14-0 Falcons victory in 1978.

Washington vs Philadelphia: Washington leads the series 80-70-5, but Philadelphia is 5-2 against the Redskins since 2009. The Redskins also lead the series in Philadelphia 39-36-3, but the series is tied 6-6 since 2000. In fact, the Eagles were winless against the Boston/Washington Redskins at home from 1934-45, going 0-9-2. They first beat Washington at home in 1946, 27-10. They met in the postseason once, in the 1991 Wild Card round and the Redskins won 20-6. They went to overtime four time and Washington leads that series 3-1. They last went to OT in 1999. The Redskins won that game 20-17. The last time Washington shut out Philadelphia was 23-0 in 1991. The last time Philadelphia shut out Washington was 24-0 in 1980. Their last tie was 7-7 in 1971.

Buffalo vs Miami: The Dolphins lead the series 56-40-1 and is 6-3 against the Bills since 2008. Miami leads the series at home 31-16-1, but the series is tied 4-4 in Miami since 2004. Buffalo won their first ever game against the Dolphins in Miami in 1966 and then went 0-15-1 against the Dolphins from 1967-82. The Bills helped their record at Miami from 1987-94, when they went 8-1. They met in the postseason four times, at least once in every round. Buffalo leads the playoff series 3-1. They last met in the playoffs in the 1999 Wild Card round, when Miami won 24-17. They met in the AFC Championship game in 1993 for a berth in Super Bowl XXVII. The Bills won that game 29-10 and were spanked by the Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl 52-17. They went to overtime twice, with Buffalo winning both games. The Bills won their last OT game against the Dolphins 34-31 in 1987. The last time Buffalo shut out Miami was 27-0 in 1987. The last time Miami shut out Buffalo was 28-0 in 1985. Their only tie was 14-14 in 1968.

Tennessee vs Green Bay: Tennessee leads the series 6-4 and went 3-0 against the Packers since 2001. The Titans are 4-1 at Green Bay and won their last meeting in the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field in 2004, 48-27. Okay, so the tundra wasn't frozen, since it was 52 degrees at game time. They never met in the postseason, but they did go to overtime twice. The OT series is tied 1-1 and they went to overtime in their last meeting in 2008. Tennessee won that game 19-16. Green Bay has not beaten Tennessee since 1998. Neither team has ever shut out the other.

New England vs Jacksonville: New England owns the series 8-1, winning the last five games in the series. New England owns the regular season series record 5-0. The Patriots also lead the series 2-1 in Jacksonville, winning their last meeting 34-21 in Alltel Stadium in 2006. They met in the postseason four times, playing at least once in each playoff round. New England leads the postseason series 3-1. They last met in the playoffs in the Divisional Round in 2008. The Patriots won that game 31-20 and went on to lose Super Bowl XLII against the New York Giants 17-14. The Jaguars only win against New England was in the Wild Card round in 1999, 25-10. Their first playoff meeting was in the AFC Championship game in 1997. New England won that game 20-6 and went on to lose Super Bowl XXXI to the Green Bay Packers 35-21. Neither team has ever shut out the other.

Oakland vs Carolina: The series is tied 2-2, with the Raiders winning their last meeting 17-6 in 2008. The series is also tied 1-1 at Carolina, with the Panthers winning their last home game against Oakland 27-24. They never met in the postseason nor has either team ever shut out the other.

St. Louis vs Tampa Bay: St. Louis leads the series 11-8, but Tampa Bay is 6-2 against the Rams since 1994. The Buccaneers lead the series at home 7-5, going 5-0 against the Rams in Tampa Bay since 1994. They met in the postseason twice, both times in the NFC Championship game. The Rams won both meetings. The Los Angeles Rams won 9-0 in 1980, They went on to lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-19 in Super Bowl XIV. The St. Louis Rams beat the Bucs for the NFC crown again in 2000, 11-6. They went on to beat the Tennessee Titans 23-16 in Super Bowl XXXIV. They went to overtime once, in 1986. The Rams won that game 26-20. The last time the Rams shut out Tampa Bay was in that NFC Championship game in 1980. The only regular season shutout in the series was in their first ever meeting. The Rams won that game 31-0.

Minnesota vs Houston: Minnesota leads the series 2-0, winning their last meeting 28-21 in 2008. They went to overtime in their first meeting, with the Vikings beating the Texans 34-28.
