Kings of the Cellar - July 29

Hope your summer is going well. Sometimes a break is all a team needs, because when you think they get comfortable in the cellar, they surprise you.

Today's Kings of the Cellar, the 38-63 Philadelphia Phillies are doing some winning. However, they still have a 4.5 game lead over their next closest competitor, the 42-58 Miami Marlins. The 44-57 Boston Red Sox are the AL's worst, but they're six games behind Philly. The Red Sox are playing like they want the beer in the Cellar by going 2-8 in their last ten games and 3-12 since July 10. Unlike Boston, the Phillies are 9-1 in their last ten games, winners of their last five. The Marlins are 4-6 in their last ten games and are 7-12 since July 4.

Today's honorable mention goes to the past Kings of the Cellar champion, the 52-46 Washington Nationals. The NL East Division leaders are 3-7 in their last ten games and are 1-3 since July 23.

The defending Kings of the Cellar Champion 48-51 Arizona Diamondbacks are 11 games behind the Phillies and are enjoying a four game winning streak. At this time, they are no threat to repeat.

Because of Philly's winning streak, they are 12 games ahead of the 1962 New York Mets, who were 26-75 after 101 games. The Phillies need only three more wins to make the '62 Mets' record of futility safe for another year.

Philly visits the Toronto Blue Jays this evening. The Phillies trail the series 21-29, including yesterday's win. Philly is 1-8 against the Blue Jays since July 3, 2011. They first met in the 1993 World Series, when Toronto won 4 games to 2. They went to extra innings four times, with the Phillies losing all of them. They last went to extra innings in May 2014.

Will the Phillies continue their winning ways? Will Boston surprise everyone and take the cellar?

Stay tuned.

Have a great day!!!
