Some Top 10 College Football Series Trivia

Welcome to this week's edition of NCAA Top 10 football series trivia. Let's get started.

   The #1 Alabama Crimson Tide travels to Columbia for the first time since 1978, when Bear Bryant coached the Tide, to take on the Missouri Tigers. Missouri leads the series 2-1. They first met in the Gator Bowl in 1968, when the Tigers won 35-10. Alabama got its only victory in 1978, 38-10 (the highest scoring game in the series), after losing again to the Tigers in 1975. There are no shutouts in the series.

   The #2 Oregon Ducks have a bye this week. The play the Arizona State Sun Devils next Thursday.

   The #3 South Carolina Gamecocks will invade Death Valley in Baton Rouge to take on the #9 LSU Tigers. This is the second consecutive Top 10 game for both teams. LSU dominates the series, 16-2-1. They first met in 1930, when the Gamecocks won 7-6. South Carolina didn't beat LSU again until 1994. The highest scoring game in the series came in 1973 when LSU won 33-29. The last time LSU shut out South Carolina was 42-0 in 1961. South Carolina has never shut out LSU. Their lone tie was 20-20 in 1995.

   The Vanderbilt Commodores will host the #4 Florida Gators. Florida owns the series 34-9-2. They first met in 1945, a 7-0 win for the Commodores. Vanderbilt last beat Florida in 1988 and last won two in a row from the Gators in 1952 and 1955. Vandy has never won three straight against Florida. The highest scoring game in the series came in 2005, where Florida won in a shootout 49-42. The last time the Gators shut out the Commodores was 52-0 in 1993. The last time the Commodores shut out the Gators was 20-0 in 1946. Their last tie was 14-14 in 1968.

   The #5 West Virginia Mountaineers will finish their Texas Tour this week in Lubbock to play the Texas Tech Red Raiders. They only met one other time, in 1938 in the Sun Bowl, with the Mountaineers winning 7-6.

   The Iowa State Cyclones will host the #6 Kansas State Wildcats in Ames. Iowa State leads the series 49-42-4. However Kansas State has won the last four games in the series and are 18-4 against the Cyclones since 1990. They first met in 1917, a 10-7 Iowa State victory. Their highest scoring game came in 1972, with the Cyclones winning 55-22. The last time Kansas State shut out Iowa State was 45-0 in 2003. The last time Iowa State shut out Kansas State was 24-0 in 1978. Their last tie was 7-7 in 1984.

  The #17 Stanford Cardinal travel to South Bend, Indiana to take on the #7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Notre Dame leads the series 17-9, but Stanford has won the last three games against the Irish. They first met in the Rose Bowl 1925 with Notre Dame winning 27-10. The highest scoring game came in 2005, with Stanford winning 45-38. The last time Notre Dame shut out Stanford was 27-0 in 1942. Stanford has never shut out Notre Dame.

   The #8 Ohio State Buckeyes will invade Memorial Stadium in Bloomington to take on the Indiana Hoosiers. Ohio State owns the series 68-12-5. The last time Indiana beat Ohio State, they won two straight, in 1987 and 1988. The Buckeyes have won the last 17 games against the Hoosiers. They first met in 1901, when Indiana won 18-6. The Hoosiers began the series at 5-0-1, but then Ohio State took over and never looked back. Their highest scoring game came in 1982, with the Buckeyes winning 49-25. The last time Ohio State shut out Indiana was 31-0 in 1997. The last time Indiana shut out Ohio State, outside of a tie, was 7-0 in 1947. Their last tie was 27-27 in 1990.

   The BYU Cougars will host the #10 Oregon State Beavers in Provo, Utah. The series is tied 5-5, with BYU winning the last two meetings. They first met in 1955, when the Beavers won 33-0. Their highest scoring game came last season with BYU winning 38-38. The last time Oregon State shut out BYU was 35-0 in 1961. BYU has never shut out Oregon State.

   Since there are two Top 10 teams playing each other, here is some lagniappe.

   The now out of the Top 25 Washington Huskies will take on the #11 USC Trojans at home in Seattle. USC leads the series 50-28-4, but Washington won two out of the last three games. They first met in 1923, when the Huskies won 22-0. They even played each other in the Rose Bowl in 1944, when the Trojans spanked the Huskies 29-0. The highest scoring game in the series came in 2005, when USC won 51-24. The last time USC shut out Washington was 56-0 in 2008. The last time Washington shut out USC was 27-0 in 1997. Their last tie was 21-21 in 1995.
