DCI Finals - August 17, 1985

Today in 1985, the Garfield Cadets won their then record third straight Drum Corps International World Championship in Camp Randall Stadium at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin.

Notables

  • The 27th Lancers missed DCI Finals for the first time since 1974, placing 13th and missing the 12th spot by .7 points.  They would fold after missing DCI Finals in 1986 by .3 points, placing 13th again.
  • Spirit of Atlanta beat the Phantom Regiment in DCI Finals for the first time since 1980.  It was the only movement between Semi-Finals and Finals.  Spirit would beat the Phantom Regiment again in 1986 for the third and last time.
  • Star of Indiana became the second first-year corps to make DCI Finals.  The Bleu Raeders did it first in 1972.  Star made every DCI Finals in its existence from 1985-93.
  • This would be the last DCI Finals the Freelancers would make until 1989.  They would only make Finals three more times after this season; 1989, 1991, and 1992.
  • 1985 was the last year performance times were between 11.5 and 13 minutes.  The next year, the times were changed to between 10 and 11.5 minutes.
  • The Troopers made DCI Finals for the first time since 1981.  They would make Finals again in 1986 and wouldn’t make it again until 2009.
