Today in 2004 - The 2004 DCA Southern Regional Championship

August 21, 2004 – The CorpsVets won the Drum Corps Associates Southern Regional Championship in Orlando, Florida.

Here are the results:

  1. CorpsVets 82.050
  2. Carolina Gold 80.238
  3. Heat Wave 72.775
  4. Shenandoah Sound 60.975

Notables

  • Hurricane Charlie had struck days earlier.  The original stadium was damaged and the contest was moved to a stadium across the street from Citrus Bowl Stadium.  Without the efforts of Heat Wave director Vic Kulinski, the contest would have been cancelled.
  • Even though the hurricane passed, it rained all day and stopped about an hour before the contest began.  No corps had the opportunity to rehearse that day.
  • The CorpsVets went on to make DCA Finals and placed 10th.  They first made DCA Open Class Finals in 2002 after winning Class A the year before.  They have made every DCA Finals since.
  • Three other corps performed in exhibition: Bahia Shrine, Florida Brass Alumni, and the Jackson Generals.
  • Except for Heat Wave, each corps who competed in this regional still competes today.  Although Heat Wave is gone, Orlando now has another corps, the Sun Devils.
