Today in 1957 - Washington Senators vs Chicago White Sox


August 20, 1957 – Today in 1957, the Washington Senators took on the Chicago White Sox in Comiskey Park in Chicago.

The White Sox took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd on RBIs by Minnie Minoso and Walt Dropo, and a two run homerun by Larry Doby.  The Senators were unable to respond and had yet to get their first hit.

Pitcher Bob Keegan added to Chicago’s lead by hitting an RBI single in the 5th.  Washington still could not get a hit off of Keegan.  Chicago led 6-0.

Keegan had a no-hitter going into the bottom of the 9th.  Jim Lemon pinch hit for Rocky Bridges and grounded out to shortstop.  Julio Becquer pinch hit for pitcher Joe Black.  Keegan struck him out.  Senator great Eddie Yost was Washington’s last chance to get on base.  Yost hit a foul ball which was caught by first baseman Walt Dropo and the game was over.  Chicago won 6-0.

Bob Keegan pitched his only career no-hitter.  He went to 8-6 with the win.  Losing pitcher Chuck Stobbs fell to 6-16.

Chicago went to 70-48 and was still 2nd in the American League.  They trailed the New York Yankees by 7 games.  Washington went to 46-73 and was tied for last with the Kansas City A’s.  They trailed the Yankees by 31.5 games.

Notables

  • Four Hall of Famers played or managed in this game, all with Chicago: Players Luis Aparicio, Nellie Fox, and Larry Doby, and manager Al Lopez.
  • This was Cookie Lavagetto’s first year managing the Senators.  He would manage the team until 1960.
  • This was also Al Lopez’s first year managing the White Sox.  He would lead the team to the AL Pennant in 1959 and a World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
  • Lavagetto and Lopez played for the Brooklyn Dodgers, but were never teammates.  
  • Minnie Minoso is the only player to appear at the plate in five different decades.
  • Larry Doby was the first African-American player in the American League.  He played for the Cleveland Indians from 1947-55 before going to the White Sox in 1956 and 1957.  He returned to Cleveland in 1958 and ended up in Detroit before rejoining the White Sox in 1959.  He retired after that season.
