Today in 1978 - St. Louis Cardinals vs Cincinnati Reds

August 22, 1978 – Today in 1978 the St. Louis Cardinal teed up against the Cincinnati Reds at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Cincinnati got on the board first with a 2 run homerun by Dan Driessen.  They increased their lead over the Cardinals by a 2 RBI single by Ken Griffey (Sr.).  The Cardinals led 4-0.

In the top of the 9th, St. Louis rallied.  Tim Simmons hit a leadoff homerun.  Tom Seaver was replaced on the mound by Tom Hume.  Jerry Mumphrey hit an RBI single and Tony Scott hit a 2 run double.  The game was now tied 4-4.

Cardinal relief pitcher Buddy Schultz walked Joe Morgan, but got the next three batters out.  The game went to extra innings.

In the top of the 11th, Dave Tomlin replaced Doug Blair on the mound.  Mumphrey struck out looking.  Pinch hitters Mike Tyson hit a single into center field and Tony Scott flied out into center field.  Lou Brock hit a pop fly to second and the inning was over.

In the bottom of the 11th, Tom Bruno replaced Buddy Schultz on the mound.  Pete Rose hit a fly ball to left field; one out.  Joe Morgan struck out looking.  Griffey was intentionally walked.  George Foster came to the plate.  Griffey stole second.  Then Foster hit a single into left field and Griffey scored.  Game over.  Cincinnati beat St. Louis 5-4.

Dave Tomlin went to 7-1 with the win and Tom Bruno went to 3-1 with the loss.  Cincinnati went to 71-55 with the win and was 2.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.  They were 3rd in the NL West.  St. Louis fell to 53-73, 5th place and 15 games behind the NL East leading Philadelphia Phillies.

Notables

  • Five Hall of Famers either played or managed in this game: Lou Brock for the Cardinals and Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, Tom Seaver, and manager Sparky Anderson for the Reds.
  • This was Ken Boyer’s first year managing the Cardinals.  He would manage the team until 1980.
  • Boyer also played for St. Louis from 1955-65.
  • This was Sparky Anderson’s last year managing the Reds.  He had been manager of the team since 1970 and led the team to two World Series championships.  He would become the manager of the Detroit Tigers in 1979 and lead them to the 1984 World Series championship.  He would become the first manager to lead a team to a World Series win in both the National League and American League.  He managed the Tigers from 1979-1995.
  • This was also Pete Rose’s last year with the team until his return in 1984 as a player/manager.  He played for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1979-83 and won a World Series with the team. He played for the Montreal Expos for a short time in 1984 before returning to the Reds the same year.
  • Pete Rose went on to manage the Reds from 1984-89, but was disqualified from baseball for gambling on his team’s games.
