They are officially out of danger for supplanting the Mets and should easily clear the next hurdle, the 2003 Detroit Tigers, who finished that season at 43-119.
The 51-74 Kansas City Royals are 2 games behind Baltimore and are 3.5 games ahead of the 53-69 Seattle Mariners. The defending champion Pittsburgh Pirates are at a comfortable distance from the Astros, with a 58-64 record. On this day last year, the Pirates were 40-81.
At this pace, the Houston Astros could finish with a 52-110 record.
