Today in 1984 - New York Mets vs San Francisco Giants


August 17, 1984 - The New York Mets visited the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park.

It was a pitchers’ duel throughout and the scoreless game went into extra innings.  In the top of the tenth, Giants starting pitcher Mike Krukow was still on the mound.  He got Rafael Santana out on a fly ball and walked Mookie Wilson.  Krukow faced Wally Backman.  Backman hit a two rum home run and Krukow was replaced by Gary Lavelle, who retired the side with one man on.

Jesse Orosco came in for Mets starting pitcher Dwight Gooden.  Bob Brenly got on with one out, but Orosco got Joel Youngblood and pinch hitter Dusty Baker out to end the ball game.  Mets won 2-0.

Losing pitcher Mike Krukow struck out 10 batters and went to 10-9.  Winning pitcher Dwight Gooden struck out 12 batters and went to 11-8.  Jesse Orosco got his 26th save of the season.

The Mets went to 67-51 with the victory and was 1.5 games behind the Chicago Cubs.  The Mets were second in the NL East.

The San Francisco Giants fell to 45-73 and was 24.5 games behind the San Diego Padres.  The Giants were last in the NL West.

Notables

  • Future Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly played for the Mets.  He batted 1-3.  Brenly managed the Diamondbacks when they won the 2001 World Series. 
  • Dusty Baker went on to become a long time manager of the Giants. In his last year as manager of the Giants in 2002, he took the team to the World Series.
  • Mets manager Davey Johnson was in his first year with the team.  He went on to manage the Mets to a 1986 World Series Championship.
     
  • This was Danny Ozark’s only year coaching the Giants and it was his last year as a major league manager.  He managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 1973-79.
